Marbella, the city of Spain
Marbella is a city located in the Malaga province of the Andalusia region of Spain. With the population of about 135,000 Marbella is a popular beach resort of Costa del Sol. It receives tourists mainly from European countries and the US. Marbella stands on the Mediterranean coast and at the foot of La Concha Mountain. Marbella has quite developed transportation system. You can get to the nearby cities by bus or by rented car via A7 highway.
Marbella can boast of very long history that started in the Paleolithic times. First civilizations who populated this area were Phoenicians and Carthaginians. During the Roman rule Marbella was known as “Salduba”. As most of the southern Spanish territories the city was conquered by the Moors, who gave it practically modern name “Marbi-la”. In 1485 the city was reconquered by the Christian Spain. Till 1953 Marbella was a little village with less than 1,000 people, but since it was bought by the prince Alfonso it turned into a modern tourist destination with lots of hotels, holiday houses and developed tourist infrastructure. As a result of rich history and mix of civilizations Marbella now is a very attractive city with many interesting architectural monuments. Among the most popular sights are: Arabian wall, Bonsai museum, Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo, the Old City, Playa de la Bajadilla, Playa de Fontanilla, Puerto Banús, King Fahad's palace, The Golden Mile and the Encarnation's Church – the oldest religious building in the city.
